Social Media Savvy

Introduction and Welcome:

Who is a "friend" of Redeemer on Facebook?
Who is a reader of Redeemer's blog: Redeemer Writes?
Who has been on Twitter?
Who uses Redeemer's website: www.redeemer.org regularly?

The Social Media Revolution Video:

After watching that video- what is your impression of social media...what surprised you?

What is Social Media?
According to wikipedia.com, Social media are media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media uses web-based technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogues. ...also define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, which allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content." Businesses also refer to social media as consumer-generated media (CGM). A common thread running through all definitions of social media is a blending of technology and social interaction for the co-creation of value.

Redeemer's website: www.redeemer.org

Did you know that you can:
Redeemer's website is currently undergoing a redesign and re-structure. While our website was advanced and helpful when it was designed 10 years ago, there are many new features and formatting options that we are excited to update in order to make it a great place for both members and non-members alike to visit and find helpful information.

Redeemer's Blog: www.redeemerwrites.com

What is a blog?
A web-log or journal.

Redeemer Writes is a (virtual) place where people can learn, ask, share, connect and grow individually and as community. Here you will find insights into ministry, both inside and outside of Redeemer.

Sample blog posts: Pr. Brian, Rozella, David Hansen

According to wikipedia, Facebook:
  • is a social network service and website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.
  • As of July 2010 has more than 500 million active users
  • Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile.
  • users may also join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics.
  • allows anyone who declares themselves to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the website.
Facebook allows links, photos and messages to be shared with anyone who is a "friend". There are privacy settings which can be changed to allow your profile, photos, etc. to be visible to the public or to tighten your privacy so that certain features are visible only to certain "friends".

At Redeemer, we update Facebook most regularly. Here we post:
  • Information about upcoming events.
  • Links to our blog posts.
  • The menu for each Wednesday dinner.
  • Any changes to the regular program/Worship schedule.
  • A link to our weekly devotion and monthly newsletter.
  • Marketing for any ministry (just email Amber to request posting).
We also have a "fan" page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Redeemer-Lutheran-Church-Atlanta/146306988715421

The fan page is perfect for people who want to stay connected to Redeemer, but are not Redeemer members or visitors. The fan page does not include more confidential information about the church or photos of members, rather focuses on telling people what events/programs are happening at Redeemer that they may like to attend.

According to wikipedia, Twitter:
  • is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking and microblogging service, enabling its users to send and read other users' messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page.

  • Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other users' tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.

  • All users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website & compatible external applications (such as on smartphones).

  • Since its creation in March 2006, Twitter has gained popularity worldwide and currently has more than 175 million users. It is estimated that Twitter has 190 million users, generating 65 million tweets a day and handling over 800,000 search queries per day.
